Unrooting Your Droid
The question of how to unroot Android phone comes up quite frequently, and hopefully this will help the Motorola Droid users out. If you have rooted your Droid and have decided that you want to go back to stock (i.e. the way your phone’s operating system was right out of the box), there is a way to do it. For a more information on unrooting please visit Root Your Droid for pictures, and a video can be viewed below as well.
Android’s Girl is not responsible for any damage that may occur while trying to unroot your Motorola Droid.
- Connect your Droid to your PC using your USB data cable.
- Mount your MicroSD card.
- Download the Droid Unroot Package zip file. This package according to Root Your Droid claims that it will not remove your personal information – it only removes all root files and settings.
Rename the unroot zip file to “update.zip” – remove the “unroot_” at the beginning of the original package name. Users currently running Window 7 or Vista do not need to include “.zip” when renaming. - Drag your renamed zip file onto your MicroSD card.
- If you are using Stock Recovery Console please skip to step 15 for instructions once you have Stock Recovery Console open.
- If you are using SPRecovery, Power down your Droid completely.
- While holding the X key on the physical keyboard, hold the power button to turn on the phone – do NOT let go of the X key.
- Once you are booted into the SPRecovery Console let go of the X key.
- Using your 5 way navigation pad, scroll down to “install” on the main menu and select with gold center key.
- Inside the “install” option select “Allow update.zip Installation”
- After a few minutes, you will see “Install from sdcard complete” – from here navigate back to the SPRecovery main menu by tapping the power button.
- Select “wipe cache partition” – this will clear your root data.
- After a few seconds scroll to “reboot system now”
- Once rebooted, you should be unrooted.
- Using the Stock Recovery Console, scroll to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and push the gold center key.
- Once the process is complete, scroll to “reboot system now”
- Once rebooted, you should be unrooted.
